Dr. David Woo, MD

Dr. David Woo is the owner and head clinical psychiatrist at Madison Avenue TMS and Therapy in New York City. He is certified in psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Woo completed his residency and a fellowship at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City after receiving his Doctorate in Medicine from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After completing his fellowship, he stayed on as an Attending Psychiatrist at the Beth Israel Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic, where he contributed to research on depression and received the Philip Hauptman Award for Excellence in Teaching before starting his own private practice in 2010. During this time, he contributed as a consultant in Geriatric Psychiatry at Jewish Life Care and St. Michael’s Assisted Living facilities.

Dr. Woo combines evidence-based medicine with psychodynamic psychotherapy (talk therapy with a focus on shorter treatment periods and a strong doctor-patient relationship) and specializes in helping patients suffering from mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). To this end, Dr. Woo employs transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy to relieve the symptoms of patients with treatment-resistant mood conditions and collaborates with other mental health professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for his patients.

TMS Practice

Driven by a desire to leverage the most promising new practices for mental health wellness, Dr. Woo incorporated TMS into his practice in 2017 when he obtained extensive training and certification to administer TMS therapy. Dr. Woo now administers the procedure using the Brainsway Deep TMS device but is also trained in Neurostar TMS. Since the addition of TMS to his practice, Dr. Woo has helped hundreds of patients find relief from their symptoms in cases where pharmaceutical medications have proven ineffective.

Philosophy Of Care

As a practicing psychiatrist, Dr. Woo understands that anyone can experience mental health issues and is passionate about treating patients as individuals that are not defined by their disorders. He conducts all treatment with compassion and understanding and works to dispel the stigma around mental illness by empowering patients to understand more about how the brain works and how different treatments function. In particular, he maintains a regularly updated blog with educational material about mood disorders and treatments.

“It’s not easy to live with a mood disorder, but patients should not lose hope or let their illness define them. It can happen to anyone, and the more we know about our own brains, the better we can understand and believe in a path to recovery.”

Research And Publications

Dr. Woo maintains an active interest in the latest research and emerging developments in the field of psychiatry. In particular, his research centers around how brain structure and chemical makeup affect mental health symptoms during different stages of life, and how this informs treatment. He is keenly interested in how TMS can be precisely targeted to certain brain structures in order to treat depression and other conditions such as anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) while avoiding the unwanted side-effects associated with traditional medications.

Dr. Woo has co-authored the following papers:

Rosenberg, I., DO, Woo, D. MD, and Roane, D., MD. The Aging Patient with Chronic Schizophrenia. 2009;17, 5.
